Beat Jans was born in 1964 and grew up in Riehen in the canton of Basel-Stadt. He successfully completed an apprenticeship as a farmer in the canton of Basel-Landschaft before qualifying as an agrotechnician from the Technical Centre for Tropical Agriculture, and later graduating as an environmental scientist from ETH Zurich.

Between 1987 and 1989 Beat Jans worked for the independent development organisation Helvetas in Haiti and Paraguay. After graduating as an environmental scientist in 1994 he worked as an environmental and communications consultant. Between 2009 and 2018 he lectured at the University of Basel and between 1995 and 2010 was a member of the management team of the nature conservation organisation Pro Natura. Between 2010 and 2020 Beat Jans was also a board member of the utilities provider IWB.

Between 2000 and 2005 Beat Jans was president of the Basel-Stadt social democratic party and was a member of the cantonal parliament from 2001 to 2011. He was a member of the National Council from 2010 to 2020 and was vice president of the Swiss social democratic party from 2015 to 2020. He was president of the Basel-Stadt cantonal council from 2021 to 2023.

Beat Jans is married and has two daughters.

The United Federal Assembly elected Beat Jans to the Federal Council on 13 December 2023. He has been head of the Federal Department of Justice and Police since 1 January 2024 .
